Quilt Storage - A Quilt Closet

We all struggle with quilt storage. Some of us keep our quilts on a spare bed so that they don't get those unsightly creases in them. Others fold and store on shelves but then find themselves taking them out and re-folding them every couple of months. Some roll their wall size quilts around "pool noodles" (those foam toys kids love to take to the swimming pool). But that doesn't work well for bed quilts.

I like to hang my quilts for storage. We have built a closet in our house that is 9 feet high on the inside. We hung the rod as close to the ceiling as possible. (As you can see in the photo to the left, the closet isn't quite done yet - no doors or trim). I can actually hang a 96" quilt in this closet without it touching the floor. "My Christmas Baltimore" is the quilt at the far right in the photo. It misses the floor by at least an inch.

I place pants hangers across the top of the quilts every 14"- 18". I then fold the quilts accordion style. The folds are very gentle and I don't get creases in the quilts. That means I don't have to re-fold these quilts every 2-3 months.

A regular closet with a shelf above the rod will allow you to hang a quilt that is about 60" - 64" in length. Take out the shelf and move the rod as close to the ceiling as possible and you will have between 84" and 88" of hanging space.

We are also able to store our luggage under the shorter quilts so that space isn't wasted. It would also be possible to divide the closet in half and hang a second rod beneath part of the first rod. You've seen this done in magazines for kids rooms so that the smaller kids can reach their own clothes. We could use it to hang two rows of smaller wall hangings.

For the photo at the right, I looked up at the rod towards the top of the closet. You can see the multiple pant hangers that are attached to the individual quilts. You can also see how the quilts fall in soft rounded edges rather than sharp, harsh creases.
